KUTZTOWN, Pa- Victoria Pungello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) scored a pair of goals to lead the 21
st ranked West Chester University women's soccer team (9-1-3, 7-1-3) to a 2-0 victory over Kutztown (8-4-1, 7-4-1) on Wednesday night.
Pungello opened the scoring in the 23
rd minute when she finished off a pair of passes from
Lindsey Balmer (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and fellow captain
Jenna Fox (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) to give the Golden Rams the early 1-0 lead.
This lead held up through the remainder of the first half as the Golden Rams finished the first 45 minutes with an 11-5 lead in shots, a 5-1 lead in shots on goal, and a 4-0 lead in corners.
In the second half, Kutztown applied pressure to the West Chester defense midway through the half but the Golden Rams continued to outshoot their hosts by an 11-2 margin, including a 7-1 lead in shots on goal, including Pungello's second goal of the evening.
With just 10 minutes left, West Chester was applying steady pressure to the Kutztown defense and after a pair of saves by Morgan O'Donnell moments earlier, the Golden Rams were eventually fouled with just under 10 minutes to play.
Pungello stepped up to take a free kick from outside the box but the distance did not matter for the senior as she sent a hard shot in on goal that O'Donnell could not handle, which stretched the lead to 2-0.
With under five minutes to play, West Chester won another free kick inside the box and Pungello very nearly buried her third goal of the night but the shot bounced off the inside of the post and was cleared out as the deficit remained at 2-0.
West Chester finished the victory, its fourth in a row, with a 22-7 lead in shots, including a 12-2 lead in shots on goal, along with a 4-2 lead in corners.
Grace Keen (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) made two saves, while her counterpart O'Donnell made 10 stops to try and slow the potent Golden Ram offense.
With tonight's victory, West Chester stretched its unbeaten streak to nine in a row and has outscored its opponents 15-0 over the course of its four-game winning streak.
