WEST CHESTER, Pa.- The 15
th-ranked and top-seeded West Chester University women's soccer team (13-1-4) returned to action on Tuesday afternoon in the PSAC Quarterfinals against fifth-seeded Clarion (4-12-3). West Chester jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half and never wavered en route to a dominant 5-1 victory over the Golden Eagles.
Faith Matter (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) scored the first goal of the game for West Chester in the 11
th minute when she dropped in her seventh goal of the season over a charging Sage Sherk to give West Chester the early 1-0 lead.
Kianna Barber (Browns Mills, N.J./BCIT), the PSAC East Player of the Year, as announced by the league office earlier today, doubled the lead in the 28
th minute she took a perfect pass off a free kick from PSAC East Rookie of the Year
Katie Dougherty (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown West) and dribbled in on goal to give West Chester a 2-0 lead.
Barber added an assist for her third point of the first half just moments before the halftime break when
Jenna Fox (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) scored her second of the year and second in as many games to give West Chester a 3-0 advantage at the break.
West Chester dominated the first half and ended the first 45 minutes with a 12-3 lead in shots and a 3-0 lead in corners.
With a comfortable lead at the midway point, head coach
Betty Ann Kempf Townsley was able to turn to her bench, going deep into the bench for the second half to finish off the Quarterfinal victory.
Kate Alexander (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) scored twice in the second half, scoring her first goal of the day in the 58
th minute with assists from
Maddie Mosier (Hockessin, Del./Padua) and
Mia Amen (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) before adding another in the 79
th minute off an assist from
Lena Ackerman (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford).
Clarion avoided the shutout loss when the Golden Eagles took advantage of a breakdown defensively in the midfield and earned a penalty kick after a foul just inside the 18. Marisa Colondrillo converted the chance in the 84
th minute to cut the Golden Ram lead to 5-1, but this was as close as the visitors could get in the Quarterfinal loss.
West Chester ended the match with a 20-16 lead in shots and a 13-9 lead in shots on goal, along with a 7-2 lead in corners.
Grace Keen (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) earned the victory in goal with eight saves, while Sherk made eight saves of her own in an attempt to keep the Golden Eagles' season alive for another day.
With this victory, West Chester will host the PSAC Championship weekend for the first time since 2017, on Friday and Sunday at Rockwell Field. The Golden Rams will return to action on Friday afternoon, facing the winner of the Gannon vs. Shepherd matchup at 1 p.m. This semifinal will be the second of the day, with the first at 10 a.m. on Friday morning between Millersville and the winner of the matchup between Indiana (Pa.) and Kutztown, which is scheduled to be played later this evening.
