Men's Soccer Tops Southern Connecticut State, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn.- Maksym Komperda (Whitehall, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) scored a pair of goals to help lead the West Chester University men's soccer team (2-1-0) to a 3-1 victory over Southern Connecticut State (0-2-1) on the road on Saturday afternoon.

Komperda scored the first goal of the game in the 35th minute, which gave the visitors a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

Despite the halftime lead, Southern Connecticut ended the opening half with a 1-0 lead in corners and a 7-4 lead in shots, but Alexi Amanatidis (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Shipley) played well, making three first-half saves to keep the Owls off the scoreboard.

In the 63rd minute, Tyler Vagner (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview) scored his first goal as a Golden Ram off an assist by fellow newcomer Luke Newman (Mission Viejo, Ca./Santa Margarita Catholic) before Giancarlo Ciotoli cut the lead in half with a goal of his own in the 67th minute.

With the game appearing destined to end in a 2-1 victory for the Golden Rams, Komperda scored his second of the day in the 85th minute off an assist from Peter Tichy (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) to fully put the game out of reach at 3-1 in favor of the Golden Rams.

SCSU ended the game with a 13-8 lead in shots and a 5-4 lead in shots on goal, but Amanatidis played well in his season debut, making five saves to quiet the Owl offense on Saturday.
