Women's Rugby Drops Season Opener to Davenport, 57-7

GRAND RAPIDS, Mi.- The West Chester University women's rugby team returned to action on Saturday morning to renew its rivalry with NIRA foe Davenport (1-0) in Michigan. West Chester battled throughout the afternoon but fell to the Panthers by a 57-7 final.

"Despite the loss our structure was strong and we had a great work rate so we have solid building blocks heading into a short week with American International on Friday," said head coach Tony DeRemer after the loss.

The Golden Rams fell behind early in their seemingly annual trek to Michigan, trailing throughout the match despite a strong defensive effort, which held the high-powered Panther offense to just 24 points in the first half.

The Golden Rams scored late as Christelle Adikpeto (Abomey Calavi, Benin/Moon Area) capped off an exciting final offensive push for West Chester with her first try of the season as the clock ticked down. Emma Davies (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) picked up her first points of the season as well, nailing a long conversion attempt to make the score 57-7.

DeRemer singled out Taylor Baldwin (Joppa, Md./Perry Hall Christian) as another Golden Ram, who played well offensively in the setback, consistently moving the ball forward with strong carries throughout the afternoon. He also singled out freshman Evie Staehle, who had a great first game defensively for the Golden Rams with excellent tackling skills throughout the match.
