WEST CHESTER, Pa.- Lindsey Balmer (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 37
th minute off a
Brielle Zink (Islip, N.Y./Islip) to help lead the 17
th-ranked West Chester University women's soccer team (10-1-1, 9-1-1) to a dominant 4-0 win over East Stroudsburg (5-6-2, 3-6-2) on Wednesday afternoon on Rockwell Field.
Balmer's goal was the lone first-half tally for West Chester, despite the Golden Rams outshooting the Warriors by a 16-7 margin in the opening 45 minutes.
The early pressure paid off quickly in the second half as West Chester scored three goals to roll to a 4-0 victory over the visiting Warriors.
The leg of
Katie Dougherty (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown West) will not get top billing in the box score, however, it was her free kick efforts, which led to all three second half goals for the Golden Rams as she picked up assists on
Lauren Reimold (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) and
Emma Suhoski (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood)'s goals in the 72nd and 83rd minute and her free kick in the 49th led to a penalty kick goal by
Kianna Barber (Browns Mills, N.J./BCIT).
Dougherty will not receive an assist on the stat sheet on Barber's fifth goal of the year and her third in the last two games, but it was her free kick into the box that led to East Stroudsburg keeper, Ava Perrone, fouling
Adriana Ryder (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert), thus giving West Chester the early second-half penalty kick that Barber converted.
West Chester controlled the second half as well, finishing the match with a 25-11 lead in shots, including a 10-5 lead in shots on goal, while East Stroudsburg finished with a narrow 6-5 lead in corners after earning three and conceding just one in the second half.
Grace Keen (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) made five saves in goal for West Chester as she picked up her third shutout in a row.
Perrone made five saves in goal in 76 minutes for ESU, while Emmelia Rucks added a save of her own in the final seconds to keep the deficit at four.
