No. 7 West Chester Holds Off No. 9 Slippery Rock, 5-2

WEST CHESTER, PA – Junior Veerle Hersman (Lisse, The Netherlands) scored twice to lead seventh-ranked West Chester University to a 5-2 victory over ninth-ranked Slippery Rock in a pivotal Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) field hockey matchup Saturday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field.

With the win, West Chester (10-6, 3-5 PSAC) moved into sole possession of sixth place in the conference standings and closer to securing a berth in the 2026 PSAC Tournament. The Golden Rams could clinch a postseason spot as early as Tuesday, when Frostburg State (6-10, 1-6) hosts IUP (11-3, 5-1) at 4 p.m.

Mansfield (6-11, 2-6) currently sits one game behind West Chester, tied with Slippery Rock (10-6, 2-6) for seventh place. The Golden Rams hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over both teams following victories against each earlier this season.

Frostburg State remains a game and a half behind West Chester with two contests remaining on its regular-season schedule. The Bobcats will host the Golden Rams next Saturday in the regular-season finale. Should Frostburg State fall to IUP on Tuesday, West Chester would clinch the sixth and final spot in the PSAC Tournament. A Bobcats victory, however, would set up a winner-take-all showdown between West Chester and Frostburg State next Saturday in Maryland.

Grace Shepherd (Church Hill, Md. / The Gunston School) and Nina Scott (Schwenksville, Pa. / Spring-Ford) each redirected shots from Anna Finn (Windsor, N.Y. / Windsor) at the top of the circle into the cage approximately five minutes apart in the second quarter, giving West Chester a 2-0 advantage.

Slippery Rock responded shortly after halftime, capitalizing on a 2-on-1 opportunity to cut the deficit to one. The Golden Rams, however, quickly regained control. Hersman scored consecutive goals, one in the third quarter and another in the fourth, to extend the lead to 4-1. Both goals came on penalty corners, as Hersman took the insertion from Laura Rogers (Delmar, Del. / Delmar) and fired a shot past the Slippery Rock goalkeeper just inside the near post.

Allison Patel (Mickleton, N.J. / Kingsway Regional) extended the Golden Rams' advantage by finishing a rebound from the middle of the circle to make it 5-1. Slippery Rock answered just 15 seconds later to trim the deficit to 5-2, but West Chester's lead proved insurmountable.

West Chester finished with a 21-12 advantage in shots and a 13-6 edge in penalty corners. Freshman goalkeeper Erin O'Brien (Marlton, N.J. / Cherokee) recorded five saves to secure the victory.

West Chester honored its seven seniors playing in their final home game at Vonnie Gros Field on Senior Day in a brief ceremony before the contest. Rogers, Patel, Mikenna Price (Henryville, Pa. / Pocono Mountain East), Lana Hughes (Center Valley, Pa. / Southern Lehigh), Sofia Brown (Broomall, Pa. / Cardinal O'Hara), Gianna Funari (Voorhees, N.J. / Bishop Eustace) and Isabella Schute (Chalfont, Pa. / Central Bucks South) were all recognized for their contributions to the Golden Rams field hockey program.

The Golden Rams return to action next Saturday when they travel to Frostburg State for their regular-season finale. With a potential postseason berth on the line, West Chester will look to close out the regular season with another strong performance. The contest is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
