WEST CHESTER, Pa.- The West Chester University men's soccer team (7-4-7) returned to action Sunday afternoon in the PSAC Quarterfinals on Rockwell Field against the third seed from the PSAC West, Seton Hill (7-5-7). Seeking its fourth consecutive PSAC Semifinal appearance, West Chester battled throughout the afternoon and erased a pair of one-goal deficits on two separate occasions but was forced to settle for a 2-2 draw and fell to the visiting Griffins 4-1 in penalty kicks.
Maksym Komperda (Whitehall, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) and
Lukas Bentsen (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both scored goals for West Chester on Sunday afternoon, finding the back of the net in the 65
th and 79
th minutes to erase a pair of one-goal deficits to force overtime and eventually PKs to decide who would advance to the PSAC Semifinals.
After a scoreless first half, Seton Hill took a one-goal lead in the second 62
nd when James Aubrey tipped home a cross from Tomas Gomes to give the visiting Griffins an early 1-0 lead.
This goal was the first of four goals in 18 minutes as Komperda scored his fourth goal of the week off a cross from
Joshua Rick (Berwyn, Pa./Devon Prep) after the freshman had made a great run down the far sideline to tie the game at 1-1.
Felix Knorn broke the tie in the 71
st minute with a laser of a shot from distance, scoring his third goal of the season to put the visitors back out in front 2-1. The Golden Rams would not quiet down as Bentsen found the back of the net for the fourth time this season after a pass from
Alex Fedor (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East), after the ball bounced around in the box following a corner kick.
The Golden Rams went down a man just moments later to a red card, forcing the hosts to play the final 10 minutes of regulation and both overtimes shorthanded. Seton Hill had the best of the chances in the extra periods, outshooting West Chester by 5-0 margins in both frames, but the Golden Ram defense, led by three
Jaden Howard (Townsend, Del./Middletown) saves in extra time, stood tall and sent the game to penalty kicks.
In penalty kicks, Komperda made his first attempt after a successful attempt by Knorn to open the scoring, which tied things at 1-1 early. Seton Hill, led by Toby Dance, Paul Eder, and Tomas Gomes, converted their next three attempts, while Jannik Reiss stopped a pair of Golden Ram opportunities to lift the Griffins to a 4-1 victory.
Howard played well on Sunday, making 10 saves in his 110 minutes of action, while his counterpart, Reiss, made four stops of his own to slow the potent Golden Ram offense, which had entered Sunday off a 3-0 road win over Shepherd on Thursday.
