LEXINGTON, N.C.- Cara Murphy (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) fired an eight-over 80 to sit in 11
th after the opening round of the Sapona Intercollegiate and help West Chester to fourth in the team standings with an opening round 330, just six strokes off of Montana St-Billings in first with an opening round 324.
Murphy carded a pair of birdies on her back nine as she birdied the par-three third and par-four eighth on her way home to shoot a 38 after firing a 42 on her first nine of the spring season. Murphy led the team in birdies on Monday and is tied for fifth in the field in birdies, while also ranking in a tie for first in the field in par-three scoring average (2.75; -1) for the opening round.
Murphy is one of four Golden Rams in the top-20 after the opening round as
Fatima Rizvi (Lucknow, India/RPS Academies) and
Margaux Solis (Houston, Tx./Klein) are tied for 19
th with opening rounds of 83 (+11), while
Morgan Kunze (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford), who is playing as an individual, is 18
th with an opening round of 82 (+10).
Peyton Costabile of High Point is first after the opening round, firing a one-over 73 on Monday with a field-best four birdies in the first round. Montana St-Billings holds two of the top three spots on the leaderboard with opening rounds of 324 and 326, while Southern Wesleyan is second with an opening round of 325. Edward Waters rounds out the top five with a 333, three strokes back of West Chester.
