MILLERSVILLE, PA –
Sydney Wasdick (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove), fresh off being anointed PSAC East offensive player of the week, kept up the hot hand by scoring five goals and leading No. 11 West Chester to a 15-9 victory over host Millersville on a damp, foggy and cold Wednesday afternoon at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
West Chester (2-1, 1-0 PSAC East) opened its conference slate with a win for the 10th consecutive year while Millersville fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the PSAC.
Wasdick and
Kendall Fortune (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) each scored twice during a five-goal second quarter that pushed the Golden Rams to a 7-3 lead by halftime.
Still clinging to a vicarious 6-3 advantage late in the second, West Chester killed off a 2-man advantage for Millersville, allowing just two shots and eventually forcing a turnover. Wasdick converted the following possession into a free position goal with five minutes to play in the first half.
Morgan Koons (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood), later came up with a big save on a free position attempt with two seconds left in the half to preserve the four-goal lead heading into the break.
Millersville's Kayleigh Dunn and Jodylynn Cadden each scored three goals to lead the Marauders' attack. Dunn potted back-to-back tallies in the first four minutes of the third quarter to pull the hosts to within three (8-5). However, West Chester answered with a four-goal run to open up an insurmountable 12-6 advantage by the end of the quarter.
Cadden posted back-to-back tallies of her own at the beginning of the fourth quarter to drag Millersville to within four at 12-8 with 10 minutes left in the contest. That's when West Chester head coach
Ginny Martino called timeout to rally the troops for the stretch run.
The Golden Rams answered with a three-goal run of its own that made it a 15-8 lead in the dark, night-like conditions due to the dense fog settling in on Biemesderfer Stadium.
Koons made eight saves in the cage for West Chester to improve to 2-0 on the year. K.C. O'Neill made eight saves as well for the Marauders.
West Chester continues its road trip Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. non-league contest at Pace University.
