STROUDSBURG, PA – Fairmont State's Breonna Marietta singled through the right side with the bases loaded plating Abbie Keilholz with the only run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Falcons to a 1-0 extra-inning win over West Chester Friday afternoon at Creekview Park in Stroudsburg, Pa.
West Chester (30-27) sees its season come to a close with the loss in the NCAA Atlantic Regional while Fairmont State (38-14) keeps its regional hopes alive and will take on East Stroudsburg in an elimination game right after the conclusion of their contest against the Golden Rams.
Keilholz led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to right center that rolled all the way to the fence. She was sacrificed to third. The Falcons' next batter hit an infield single to second, but Keilholz could not advance home, and the next batter walked on four pitches to load the bases. That's when Marietta came through with the clutch hit that West Chester had been hunting in each of its two contests in the regional this weekend.
The loss spoiled a marvelous outing from senior pitcher,
Danielle Ciliberto (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon), who scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out three over 7.1 innings in her final college outing inside the circle.
Fairmont State starter, Delaney Haller (16-5), matched her pitch-for-pitch, coming out on the winning end. She threw eight scoreless innings, allowing just four hits, walking two and striking out three. She has allowed only one run in 14 innings.
Mairead Hopkins (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) went 3-for-4 in her final college softball game.
Ceara O'Neal (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) had the other hit for the Golden Rams in her three at bats.
The loss marked the third time this season that Fairmont State came out on the winning side against the Golden Rams.
