MANSFIELD, PA – Fifth-ranked West Chester went on the road and secured a 4-0 victory over homestanding Mansfield in a non-league field hockey contest Sunday afternoon.
West Chester (3-0) remained unbeaten on the season with its third win out of the gates while Mansfield (3-2) dropped its second match in the last three outings. With the win, the Golden Rams also remained unbeaten against the Mountaineers all-time with its 20th win since the series began in 2011.
Veerle Hersman (Lissa, The Netherlands) put the visitors on top early off an assist from
Laura Rogers (Delmar, Del./Delmar) in the fourth minute of play.
Gianna Funari (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace) doubled the Golden Rams' advantage in the second quarter off an unassist from Hersman.
Anna Finn (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor) scored her sixth goal of the season early in the second half on an assist from
Ciara Margetich (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West).
Sofia Brown (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) scored in the fourth quarter from an assist by Finn. Both Finn and Hersman finished with a goal and an assist in the win.
In goal, freshman keeper,
Erin O'Brien (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) registered her first career shutout with four saves in the win.
Nora Evans (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) also registered a defensive save in the match.
West Chester is off until Thursday afternoon when the Golden Rams welcome Millersville to Vonnie Gros Field at 4 p.m. for another non-league match.
