Men's Soccer Holds off Bloomsburg 1-0 in Home Opener

WEST CHESTER, Pa.- Lukas Bentsen (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored his third goal of the season off a Danny McGonagle (Glen Mills, Pa./Rustin) free kick to provide the offensive spark as the West Chester University men's soccer team (2-2-2, 2-1-0) held off Bloomsburg (4-3-1, 0-2-0) for a 1-0 win in the Golden Rams' home opener on Saturday afternoon.

Playing perhaps its latest home opener in recent memory after its original home opener against Jefferson in late August was postponed and later canceled due to inclement weather, West Chester needed only one shot on goal in the first half to take the lead as McGonagle took a free kick from just inside midfield and found Bentsen in the box, who converted the chance to give West Chester an early 1-0 lead.

The West Chester defense was the story of the day on Rockwell on Saturday as the Golden Rams held the potent Bloomsburg offense scoreless, thanks in no small part to the efforts of Jaden Howard (Townsend, Del./Middletown), who was credited with 10 saves (five in each half) in the victory.

Perhaps the best play of the day came in the 41st minute, when Howard made a sprawling stop on a shot from right in front of the goal by Dylan Kopenits, keeping the Huskies off the scoreboard heading into the halftime break.

Bloomsburg applied seemingly relentless pressure to the Golden Ram defense in the second half, but Howard and company were equal to the task, turning the Huskies away throughout the final 45 minutes, including two more big saves by Howard in the final 50 seconds of the match as he punched a Caleb Sitler chance over the crossbar before making a final stop on Owen Hollobaugh with under 30 seconds to play following a Husky corner.

Bloomsburg finished the game with a 15-3 lead in shots and a 10-2 lead in shots on goal, along with a 6-1 lead in corners.

Drew Offenberg was credited with one second-half save for Bloomsburg in the Huskies' second PSAC East loss.
