A two-sport athlete while at West Chester University, Burmester has been associated with the Golden Rams' women's lacrosse program since the mid 1990's. Playing under the guidance of former head coach, Kathy Krannebitter, Burmester spent some time away from the program until Martino, who was an assistant coach under Krannebitter while Burmester was a player, asked her to return as her top assistant in 2004.
