James Zuhlke is in the midst of his 18th season at West Chester University (Pa.) serving in the role of Sports Information Director. The 26-year veteran of the media relations field in intercollegiate athletics leads the communications and brand identity endeavors for the University’s 24 sports programs as one of the athletic department’s senior staff members.
In addition to the plethora of duties and responsibilities tied to the sports information office at West Chester University, Zuhlke is also in charger of coordination and implementation of the WCU Athletics Hall of Fame selection and induction ceremony efforts, serves on the University's Crisis Management Team and is a past member of the school's Legacy of Leadership Committee within the Division of Student Affairs.
Zuhlke supervises one full-time assistant SID and a pair of graduate assistants, along with any number of interns each semester.
During his 17+ years on campus, Zuhlke has chaired a number of search committees to hire head coaches and served on various other search committees to hire athletic department coaches and staff members.
West Chester University boasts one of the largest NCAA Division II athletic programs in the entire country while annually ranking among the elite institutions nationally in the Learfield/NACDA Director’s Cup standings each year. The Golden Rams’ athletic program has finished among the Top 12 in the Learfield/NACDA Director's Cup standings on four occasions as well as winning the F. Eugene Dixon Trophy five times in a seven-year span (2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019) as the top overall athletic program in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
During his tenure in the Delaware Valley, Zuhlke has administered the media relations activities for plenty of PSAC championship events and NCAA Tournament contests. He has covered national champion swimmers and divers, including an Olympic Trials qualifier in 2012, a three-time NCAA Regional women’s gymnastics qualifier, three Harlon Hill finalists, a pair of Tino Martinez Award finalists and one Tewaaraton Award semifinalist.
Before becoming a citizen of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Zuhlke, 53, served a seven-year stint at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, after spending one season at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut and SUNY-Cortland in Central New York. A 1999 graduate of SUNY College at Cortland, Zuhlke received his start in the media relations field while volunteering in the sports information department. He received his first of two bachelor's degrees from Utica College of Syracuse University in 1995.
Zuhlke and his wife, Danah Allen, reside in Exton, Pa., with their daughter, Madeline.
