The Golden Rams mens and womens swim teams participated in a two-day tri-meet, competing against Johns Hopkins University and host The College of New Jersey. Both West Chester squads were impressive, as the women defeated JHU 258-106 and TCNJ 294-76. The men completed the sweep with victories over JHU 240-124 and TCNJ 260-108.
WCU dominated two perennial top ten DIII opponents in their two day tri meet this weekend. Notable swims included Kathrin Dumitru, PSAC Rookie of the Year last year, in her first meet of the season, qualified for NCAA DII Championships in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.02), while posting "B" times in the 200 free, 100 and 200 fly, 200 I.M. and 100 Breaststroke events. She won all six individual events. Sophomore distance swimmer Katie Brosseau won the 400 IM (4:35.38), the 500 free (5:08.19) and the 1650 free (17:26.03), and freshman Jackie Borkowski won the 50 free (24.28) and was second in the 500 free (5:12.98). Perhaps the women's most impressive event was when they turned in the top five times in the 500 free with Danielle Ierley (5:15.14), Christie Angstadt (5:16.34), and Danielle McIntyre (5:17.24) joining Brosseau and Borkowski.
WCU men won all five relay events including a 1-2 finish in the 400 Medley Relay, on their most impressive showing in the history of this meet. This could be the best balanced team the Head Coach Jamie Rudisill has put together, including the last 8 years of PSAC Championship squads. Newcomer sophomore Matt Golebiewski, a transfer from UMD and the younger brother of WCU senior Kevin Golebiewski, won the 100 free (47.63) and was second to teammate Bart Ostrowski in the 200 free (1:41.97 and 1:43.87 respectively). Joerg Zimmermann won both butterfly races (51.01 in the 100 and 1:55.82 in the 200), Marek Malopolski won both breaststrokes (58.92 in the 100 and 2:11.54 in the 200), and Chris Salomone, coming off an impressive Florida training trip, won the distance events (4:46.04 in he 500 and 16:29.26 in the 1650 free).
In diving action, Heather Varas qualified for Nationals on both boards with a 278.325 on the three meter (second place) and a 253.25 on one meter (first place).
Both squads are now 5-1 in dual meet action this season with PSAC rival Clarion University and DII rival Southern Connecticut State University coming into town next weekend for another two-day tri meet.
