BETHLEHEM, Pa. – West Chester took first and third places in the 400 medley relay, the final event of the meet, to come from behind and defeat host Lehigh, 149-145, Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Rams (3-0) stayed unbeaten in dual meets with the narrow win over the Division I Mountain Hawks.
With a number of exceptional early season times in a men's meet that went down to the last relay, Rams head coach Jamie Rudisill called the men's meet one of the very best first half dual meets in his 20 years at WCU.
Never trailing by more than 11 points, but behind most of the meet, West Chester hung in largely on the impressive swims of senior Matt Golebiewski, who won an extremely close race in the 200m freestyle, touching in 1 minute, 41.84 seconds, less than a second off a national qualifying time. He then went on to win the 100m free in 48.09 and secured a second place in the 500m free in 4:46.43 – just three one-hundredths of a second behind teammate Rod King, who also won the 50m free in 21.98.
With the help of the divers – Jon Brittian, who won both the 1m and 3m events – and one event remaining (the 400m free relay), WCU needed a first and third-place finish to come from behind and win the meet.
With seven out of eight best dual-meet 100 free splits, the "B" relay of Eric Kunzman, David Smoker, Kevin Moyer and co-captain Dan Casey did their job, beating Lehigh's "B" relay by three seconds in a 3:15.91. Meanwhile the "A" relay of Brendan Fanslau, Rod King, Josh Pauley and Matt Golebiewski broke the ancient Lehigh Natatorium's pool record with a 3:08.94 – just two seconds ahead of Lehigh's "A" relay.
