CHESTNUT HILL, Pa. - West Chester University took both first and second singles, but host Chestnut Hill swept the rest of the seven events to earn a 7-2 non-league victory over the Golden Rams in a non-league men's tennis match Monday afternoon.
In a tough, well-contested match that lasted close to four hours, Jeff Rightnour downed Carson Richter, 6-3, 6-1 at first singles, and John Howanski topped Julius Twynan, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles to give the Rams a boost and put them back in the match after dropping all three doubles competitions.
Unfortunately for first-year head coach Tina Tharp and her charges, West Chester came up on the losing end at third, fourth and sixth singles in matches that all went to a tiebreaker in the third set.
Anthony Pugliese lost to Steve Halava, 6-1, 4-6, 11-4 at third singles while Alan Day fell to Adrian Arena, 6-3, 2-6, 10-5. Ron Shapson dropped a 7-6, 7-6 match at No. 5. Michael Ensor fell to Garrett Senior at sixth singles, 3-6, 7-6, 10-7.
Rightnour and Pugliese teamed up at first doubles, but fell to Halava and Twynan, 9-7. Howanski and Day lost to Richter and Kenny Stubblefield, 8-4, and John Gordon and Shapson lost at third doubles to Arena and Senior, 8-3.
West Chester will take on University of the Sciences on Thursday in their next fall matchup.
