Men's Soccer Upsets New York Tech, 1-0

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– Jason Mackel headed in a cross from Marc Michell in the 39th minute, and goalkeeper Garret Santora made it stand up as West Chester upset visiting New York Tech, 1-0, Friday afternoon in a non-league men’s soccer match.

Michell cradled a long corner kick on the opposite side of the penalty area and sent a cross into the middle of the area where Mackel was able to get up higher than everybody else and head the ball into the top right-hand corner of the goal for the game’s only tally.

Santora made three saves in goal, recording his 10th career shutout in the process.

New York Tech (2-1) suffered its first defeat of the season, coming off wins over East Stroudsburg and St. Rose. Cosimo D’Agostino was credited with two saves before he was red-carded and sent off in the final minute of play for a flagrant hand ball outside the area.

The Bears were pushing up trying for the equalizer when West Chester gained possession and sent freshman Jabari De Coteau in all alone. D’Agostino was out about 30 yards and De Coteau attempted to chip the ball over the keeper’s head when D’Agostino reached up with one hand and knocked the ball down.

The game was played in the midfield for the majority of the match with each side getting off just five shots apiece. Neither side could really get too many quality scoring opportunities besides the Golden Rams’ one goal off a corner kick.

West Chester (3-1) returns to action next Tuesday when the Rams entertain PSAC East rival Kutztown at home at 2 p.m.
