Weems’ Running Layup Saves West Chester In Overtime, 71-70

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– Dana Weems’ running layup in the lane at the buzzer made a 71-70 winner out of West Chester in overtime Saturday afternoon in a PSAC East showdown with visiting Bloomsburg.

Colleen Kegerreis hit a jumper in the paint with five seconds left that put Bloomsburg (8-7, 0-2 PSAC East) up 70-69 in the OT period. West Chester (10-5, 2-0 PSAC East) called timeout and then inbounded the ball to half court where the Rams called timeout again.

With the clock showing two seconds left, Golden Rams head coach Deirdre Kane asked for another second to be added and the officials obliged.

Megan Stewart inbounded the ball to Weems at the top of the key about 23 feet out. Weems drove to the hoop and laid in the game-winner as the buzzer sounded.

Bloomsburg, who saw its losing streak hit three in a row and six of its last seven, dropped its second straight overtime contest in league play and is now winless in three OT tilts on the season.

West Chester won its second straight overtime game in conference play after beating Millersville on Wednesday in OT.

The Huskies went on a mini 7-4 run down the stretch to, eventually taking a two-point lead (61-59) on a pair of free throws from Lauren Healy. However, Monica Dennison fouled out with 20 seconds left in regulation, and West Chester’s Bridget Carlin sank both of her free throw attempts to knot things up and send the game into overtime.

Weems finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Stewart posted nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds while Janelle Garber led the Golden Rams with 14 points. Renata Neal and Carlin contributed 13 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench for the hosts, winners of three straight, who are now 7-2 at home.

Bloomsburg was lights out, especially from 3-point range in the first half as the Huskies built a 33-29 advantage before the break. Bloomsburg’s biggest lead of the half, nine points, came with 3:23 left before halftime.

The Huskies shot 61.9 percent from the floor, including 50 percent from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.

Kelsey Gallagher led all scorers with 26. Kegerreis added a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds), and Healy posted 13 points. Kelly Joyce dished out a game-high seven assists.

West Chester will be back in action on Wednesday when the Golden Rams travel across town to take on rival Cheyney at 6 p.m. The game can be heard live on 91.7 WCUR-FM or on the internet at www.wcur.fm or on Red Zone Media at www.redzonemedia.com.
