BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – West Chester’s men’s swim squad bounced back from a non-league loss at home to Penn Friday with a 143-114 victory over host Bloomsburg in the regular-season finale for both schools.
West Chester (7-1) won nine of the 15 events, including a sweep of the top three spots in two events and a sweep of the top two spots in six events. The Golden Rams are off until Feb. 19 when they try to defend their team title at the 2009 PSAC Swimming Championships in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
Max Bernardes was a double winner for West Chester, taking the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 48.28 seconds and the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.95.
West Chester claimed the top three spots in both the 50 free and the 100 free. Dan Casey touched the wall first for the Golden Rams in the 50 free in 22.66 seconds. He was followed by teammates Eric Kunzman (23.01) and Bernardes (23.05). Brendan Fanslau won the 100 free in 49.53 seconds. Matt Golebiewski (49.69) and Joe Watts (50.75) placed second and third, respectively.
Matt Flanders captured the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:04.62. Rod King placed second with a 2:06.39. Peter Madueno won the 100 breaststroke with a 1:02.50 and Fanslau was second in 1:04.10.
David Smoker won the 200 butterfly (1:58.11), and Kenny McCormick took top honors in the 100 butterfly (51.43). McCormick hit an NCAA “B” cut time with that personal-best effort in the fly.
West Chester’s 200 medley relay team consisting of Flanders, Bud McClernan, Kunzman and Golebiewski placed first in 1:40.35. The Rams’ “B” squad placed second.
