WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Quarterback Joe Wright tossed two touchdown passes to Steve Miller and ran for another as West Chester University easily cruised by Cheyney University, 59-0, on a comfortable Thursday evening at John A. Farrell Stadium.
West Chester (5-4, 4-2 PSAC East) earned its 18th straight victory in the all-time series, which has been dominated by the Golden Rams. Cheyney (0-9, 0-6) is still in search of its first win this season.
Wright finished 12-for-23 with 197 yards passing before being removed from the game in the third quarter. Miller caught four balls for 77 yards and two scores. Backup QB Jared Jorgenson replaced Wright and threw two touchdown passes of his own in the third quarter. He went 3-for-3 for 93 yards during his 15 minutes of playing time.
West Chester opened the scoring in the first minute when Wright connected with Miller down the seam for a 39-yard touchdown pass and catch. Miller’s second score came just six minutes later on a 22-yard grab down the left hash mark to put the Golden Rams up, 14-0.
D’Andre Webb punched his way in from the 1-yard line for a score early in the second quarter, capping a 10-play, 55-yard drive.
The Cheyney offense could not gain any momentum against West Chester’s defense. Wolves quarterback Angel Rodriguez was held in check, managing only 64 yards on 5 of 17 passing with one interception. Running back Ron Hunter rushed for 42 yards on 15 carries, but failed to find the end zone.
Cheyney was plagued by miscues, fumbling seven times, two of which were recovered by West Chester.
Jackson Fagan led all players with 57 yards rushing on nine carries, averaging 6.1 yards per rush.
The Golden Rams’ defense was dominant, holding the Wolves to 107 yards in total offense and only seven first downs. Senior DB Kevin Garland returned a Cheyney interception 43 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Linebacker Mike Dell led the Rams with seven total tackles. Sam Scott added to his PSAC-leading tackles for loss total, adding three more in the contest. Scott had four tackles and a sack.
Coach Bill Zwann inserted four quarterbacks into the game Thursday night. Sophomore Scott Bradish and redshirt-freshman Mike Mattei both saw action under center in the fourth quarter.
The Golden Rams look to play spoiler next Saturday, as undefeated Bloomsburg comes to town.
