West Chester Volleyball Splits Saturday Doubleheader

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The duo of Michelle Powers and Kelly Martin led the West Chester women’s volleyball team as the Golden Rams earned a split in doubleheader action inside Hollinger Field House on Saturday afternoon.

West Chester fell to Lock Haven University (26-5, 14-3 PSAC) in a close, back-and-forth battle 3-1 before sweeping Bowie State 3-0.

The first match of the day was a war, with all four sets ending with less than five points between the two squads. The Golden Rams took the first set 25-23 behind four kills by Ashley Focht. West Chester carried the momentum into the second set, but Lock Haven settled in behind their trio of outstanding outside hitters.

Lock Haven won the next three sets by scores of 28-26, 25-23, and 25-21.

PSAC kills leader Xuan Gao added 16 more along with seven digs. Haley Gribler and Christie Naumann contributed 15 kills each.

Focht led the Rams with nine kills in game one. Powers added eight of her own along with three blocks. Setter Helen Fitzpatrick recorded 25 assists and five blocks.

In the second match of the day for West Chester, the Golden Rams swept Bowie State (5-21) in three straight sets.

WCU won by set scores of 25-8, 25-6, and 25-8.

Powers and Martin teamed up to put down eight kills apiece in the second match to lead all players. Senior Sam Ingersoll had an outstanding match from the service line, scoring six aces, including five in a row in the third set.

Fitzpatrick added 23 more assists along with five service aces of her own.

With the split, West Chester is now 18-13 on the season. Their record in the PSAC stands at 5-10, with only four in-conference games remaining.

The Golden Rams return to the court on Tuesday night against PSAC opponent Cheyney University at 7 p.m.
