WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester University split the singles matches 3-3 after earning two out of three points in the doubles competition to defeat visiting Eastern University, 5-4, in a non-league men's tennis match Thursday afternoon.
With the win, West Chester (3-14) put an end to its nine-game losing streak while halting Eastern's (6-7) four-game win streak.
Jeff Rightnour and Matt Thomas pulled out a 9-8 (6) victory at first doubles, despite Rightnour injuring himself during the match. He tried to go at No. 1 singles, but Eastern's Mike Roth pulled out a 6-3, 6-3 win.
John Howanski and Alan Day teamed up at No. 2 doubles for an 8-3 victory. Each won their singles match as well with Howanski pulling off a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 3 and Day a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4. Bill Ensor was a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 winner at No. 6 singles, icing the victory for the hosts. It marked Ensor's first singles win of the season, halting a 10-match losing skid.
