BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – In a battle of teams selected to tie for first place in the PSAC East by a vote of the league’s head coaches, Bloomsburg scored the upper hand early in the season with a 1-0 blanking of No. 13 West Chester in a women’s soccer tilt Wednesday evening.
West Chester (1-1, 0-1 PSAC East) dropped its first league contest in two years while Bloomsburg (1-1, 1-0) evened its record on the season with the league win.
Bloomsburg’s Katie Walczuk beat West Chester goalkeeper Lyndsie Bernardini in the 65th minute with the lone tally of the match. Bernardini made one save in the loss while Huskies goalkeeper Frances Nicoletti registered three saves.
“Lyndsie handled herself very well,” West Chester head coach Betty Ann Kempf Townsley commented on her goalie after the game. “She snuffed a girl on a breakaway really late when we were pushing everybody up to try to get the equalizer. That save kept us in the game.
“We played very well in the second half. We got some crosses up top that we just couldn’t quite finish. I’m pleased with the direction this team is going.”
The Golden Rams outshot the Huskies by a 10-4 margin, including 6-3 in the second half. One breakdown defensively in a marking assignment ultimately cost West Chester.
The Rams return home Saturday at 1 p.m. to take on Shippensburg.
