West Chester Men’s Tennis Edges USP, 5-3

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– Matt Thomas posted a come-from-behind win at third singles to lead host West Chester to a 5-3 victory over visiting University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) in a non-league men’s tennis match Friday afternoon.

West Chester (1-1) evened its record on the season, following a tough 5-4 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas.

Thomas, who dropped a decisive match against STAC last week, fell behind after losing the opening set of his match versus USP, 6-1. However, Thomas was determined to redeem himself this time around and rebounded to score wins of 6-3 and 7-5 in the next two sets to pick up the fifth and decisive point Friday.

Teammate Alan Day had his match at fifth singles suspended due to darkness with Day taking the opening set, 7-6 after an 8-6 tie-breaker win.

Jeff Rightnour was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at No. 1 singles while David Goldenberg was a 6-0, 6-4 winner at fourth singles. Rightnour teamed with John Howanski to win, 8-5, at first doubles, and Goldenberg and Thomas teamed up at No. 2 doubles for an 8-5 win.

West Chester is back in action on Saturday with a match with Chestnut Hill at 12 p.m.
