WEST CHESTER, Pa. – A penalty kick in the final minute of play by Zach Weaver lifted West Chester University’s men’s soccer team to a 1-1 tie against Shippensburg University on a beautiful fall afternoon Saturday at John A. Farrell Stadium.
West Chester (0-2-1, 0-1-1 PSAC East) looked out of sync for most of the first 45 minutes, especially during a sloppy first half marred by numerous missed opportunities.
Shippensburg (0-2-1, 0-0-1 PSAC East) opened the scoring in the 17th minute as Miles Harriger received a precision feed from Deon Rehm, beating Golden Rams’ goalkeeper Peter Weiss.
From that point, the play remained confined to the middle of the field, with neither team able to capitalize on the other’s mistakes.
The game remained 1-0 until the 90th minute, when a Shippensburg handball inside the box setup a West Chester penalty kick. Weaver, chipped the ball over a diving Clay Sale, tying the game and sending the two teams into overtime.
An uneventful first overtime was followed by an explosion of offensive opportunities in the second with six shots between the two teams in under five minutes. West Chester’s Jake Maxwell rattled the crossbar with a strong shot, followed by a header from Chris Tucci that was gobbled up by Sale.
West Chester outshot Shippensburg, 20-11, including 6-3 in the overtimes. Weiss made four saves.
The Golden Rams are back in action on Tuesday afternoon as they welcome Millersville to town at 2 p.m.
