Cheyney Holds Off West Chester Men, 60-52

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– Kenneth St.George scored a team-high 15 points, but it was not enough as West Chester fell to cross-town rival Cheyney, 60-52, in PSAC East men’s basketball tilt at Hollinger Field House Wednesday evening.

West Chester falls to 12-4 overall and 1-2 in PSAC East. Cheyney improves to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in PSAC East.

The Golden Rams got off to a slow start, quickly falling behind 15-2 in the first nine minutes of play. However, the hosts battled back the rest of the first half, outscoring their counterparts by an 18-17 margin to cut the halftime deficit to 12. West Chester shot a lowly 15.4 percent from the field in the first half and was just 12-for-52 in the game (.231).

The Rams went on a 16-4 run over the first seven mintues to open the second half and tie the game at 36-all.

Cheyney slowly stretched the lead to five (46-41) with 5:47 left to play in the second half and was able to hold off the Rams from any late run.

Also contributing for the Golden Rams was Sam Scott, who had 14 points and ripped down 12 rebounds. The Rams struggled behind the 3-point line by shooting 17.4 percent (4-for-23) behind the arc.

Cheyney’s Sharif Brady led all scorers with a game-high 21 points in 31 minutes of action. Tyrone Smith also chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds. Cheyney was very successful from the foul line as a team by shooting 55.9 percent (19-for-34).

A total of 57 fouls were whistled in the contest with 34 coming in the second half. Cheyney knocked down 12 of its final 16 free throws in the final two minutes of play to keep West Chester at bay.

West Chester was without the services of its leading scorer, Ralph Hegamin, who sat out with a leg injury.
