KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Senior Ralph Hegamin scored 17 points, reaching 1,000 career points in the process, but visiting West Chester dropped a heartbreaking contest on the road to No. 7 Kutztown, 80-69.
West Chester (13-5, 2-3 PSAC East), ranked seventh regionally, hung with nationally ranked Kutztown (16-1, 4-1), taking a brief one-point lead at the beginning of the second half, but the Bears rode the shoulders of the nation’s leading scorer to the victory.
West Chester, Pa., native Stephen Dennis, who leads the country averaging 27 points per game, netted 25 for Kutztown. Teammate Ryan Washington converted a pair of layups at the 11-minute mark that pushed the Bears’ lead to 14 and the hosts never looked back. Washington finished with 23 points.
The Golden Rams got the lead under 10 with four minutes to go on a jumper from Sam Scott, and cut the lead to nine once again with two minutes to go. But, Kutztown was able to keep the visitors at bay down the stretch.
Kenneth St. George finished with 14 points. Eli Daniel put up 17 points as well. Hegamin scored 13 points in the first half, notching his 1,000th career point at the 4:19 mark.
