West Chester Ends Season With 27-10 Setback At IUP

INDIANA, Pa. – Indiana (Pa.) limited an explosive West Chester offense to only 174 total yards and used fourth quarter touchdown runs by Darryl Herod and Teddy Blakeman to break open up a close game en route to a 27-10 victory over the Golden Rams at Miller Stadium Saturday afternoon.

IUP (6-5) ended the year with two victories while West Chester finished with a record of 4-7.

The Golden Rams entered the game averaging 29.4 points and 392 yards of total offense per game but were shut down by the Crimson Hawk defense, which allowed only a 24-yard field goal by Shawn Leo in the second quarter and a one-yard run by D’Andre Webb that made it 13-10 midway through the third quarter.

IUP’s Harvie Tuck and Blakeman both cracked the 100-yard mark on the ground with Tuck gaining 132 yards on 21 carries and Blakeman carrying 18 times for 118 yards. IUP rushed for a total of 307 yards in a ground-dominated attack.

Webb rushed for 50 yards and Jackson Fagan gained 47 for West Chester. Quarterbacks Mike Mattei and Sean McCartney combined to complete only 6 of 21 passes for 84 yards and a pair of interceptions.

IUP’s Craig Burgess kicked two 32-yard field goals in the first quarter.

Leo cut the Crimson Hawk lead in half with a 24-yard field goal in the opening minutes of the second quarter. But, IUP responded with a 60-yard drive that featured a 37-yard gallop by Tuck that took the ball to the Golden Rams’ 3-yard line. Wide receiver Pat Brewer, used several times at quarterback in a wildcat formation, went in from the one with 7:37 left before halftime.

The Golden Rams managed only three first downs and 87 yards of offense in the opening 30 minutes.

The Golden Rams marched 71 yards in 14 plays on the first drive of the third quarter, taking 7:37 off the clock and pulling within 13-10 on Webb’s short touchdown run.

NOTES: West Chester dropped a 27-10 decision to Indiana (Pa.) in its season finale Saturday afternoon … the Golden Rams finish the year 4-7 overall … it marks the first time since 2002 that West Chester ended the year with a losing record as well as the fewest amount of wins in a season since 2000 … it is also the first time in head coach Bill Zwaan’s 13-year head coaching career that he finished with a losing record … Sr., RB D’Andre Webb finishes his career 1,430 rushing yards and 23 rushing touchdowns … Webb’s 11 rushing TDs in 2010 was one less than he had in his previous three years combined … Sr., WR Dan DePalma finished the year with 962 receiving yards and nine TDs on 50 catches … his 962 yards receiving ranks 10th all-time in a single season at WCU … R-Fr., PK Shawn Leo made 9 of 10 field goal attempts on the year, breaking the school record for highest FG percentage in a single season (minimum 10 attempts) … that record had been on the books since 1979 … his only miss on the year was from 49 yards at Slippery Rock … Sr., DB Cedric Jeffries and So., LB Anthony McCloskey led the team in tackles with 61 apiece.
