WEST CHESTER, Pa. - David Goldenberg scored a straight-set win at fourth singles to secure a win for West Chester University over visiting Mercyhurst in a PSAC crossover men's tennis match at South Campus on a sun-splashed and comfortable Friday afternoon.
West Chester (2-1) dropped the final two sets of the match at fifth and second singles. However, Goldenberg's 7-5, 6-4 masterpiece at fourth singles was the fifth and deciding point, giving the Golden Rams a 5-2 lead overall in sets.
Brandon Oyama put the finishing touches on a straight-set win at third singles with a match-clinching ace just inside the box down the center line. Oyama was a 6-1, 6-2 winner in that match. J.J. Cooke was the other singles point for the Golden Rams, taking a 6-1, 6-2 decision at the sixth spot.
The Golden Rams nearly swept the double competition. Just a hard-fought 8-6 decision at first doubles prevented the hosts from taking a commanding lead in the match. Steve Hlava and Goldenberg teamed up at second doubles for an 8-3 win while Jimmy Aridas and Cooke teamed at third doubles for an 8-6 victory.
West Chester battles Edinboro Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the second match of the weekend's PSAC crossover competition.
