KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Lexi Kegerise notched 19 kills on 44 attempts to lead third-seeded West Chester University to a 3-0 sweep over second-seeded Kutztown University in the PSAC Quarterfinals Tuesday evening inside Keystone Arena.
West Chester (23-13) advances to the conference semifinals on Friday and faces Western Division champion California (Pa.), who was a 3-0 winner of Gannon in one of the other quarterfinal matchups Tuesday.
Kegerise hit .318 for the match and accounted for 19 of the team’s 47 kills to help the Golden Rams avenge a 3-0 setback to the Golden Bears just three days ago on Senior Day in Hollinger Field House.
“I think we caught them a little off guard defensively,” West Chester head coach Kassie Bellaver stated.
“We really did a nice job of spreading the ball around. We swung, we hit, and we tipped balls to the corners very effectively. Offensively, our hitting percentage Saturday didn’t compare to tonight’s.
“We served much more effectively as well. We hit our zones consistently. That was the biggest difference between Saturday and tonight.”
Kelly Martin and Julie Boblits each posted eight kills as West Chester hi .230 for the match. Helen Fitzpatrick registered a double-double with 26 assists and 14 digs. Lisa Campbell notched 20 digs to lead the Golden Rams. Morgan Litek recorded 11 digs.
West Chester hit .316 in game three and posted 61 digs and 4.5 blocks as a team in the win. It marked the first time that Bellaver reached the conference semifinals, breaking a five-year string of defeats in the quarterfinal round.
“A lot of credit goes to the girls,” Bellaver explained. “Everybody gave 100 percent tonight and executed perfectly. They played with a lot of heart out there tonight.”
In other PSAC Quarterfinal action, Lock Haven defeated Shippensburg, 3-0, and Clarion downed Edinboro, 3-2. West Chester takes on Cal Friday in Lock Haven in one semifinal while host Lock Haven battles Clarion in the other semifinal. The PSAC Championship Match is set for Saturday night.
