Men's Basketball Sees Playoff Hopes Vanish Against Cheyney

Box Score

CHEYNEY, Pa. – Sharif Bray scored seven of his game-high 32 points in the final two minutes of the game as host Cheyney University extinguished West Chester University’s playoff hopes with a come-from-behind, 78-72, victory at Cope Hall Wednesday evening.

West Chester (14-11, 5-8 PSAC East) saw its two-game win streak come to an end, along with its slim postseason aspirations, while Cheyney (17-8, 7-6) climbed into a tie for third place in the league standings.

Bray completed a three-point play with two minutes to play that put the Wolves on top 72-70. West Chester’s Khalif Foster then hit a pair of free throws to knot the game up at 72-apiece with 1:39 left.

However, Bray hit a jumper on Cheyney’s following possession to put the hosts on top for good. Bray and Bruce Kennedy (10 points) each knocked down a pair of free throws in the final 10 seconds to keep West Chester at bay.

The Golden Rams led by as many as 11 points with 14 minutes left in the game. But, Cheyney outscored West Chester 24-11, limiting the visitors to just three field goals in the final eight minutes while the Wolves mounted their comeback.

Cheyney took its first lead of the game with 3:13 remaining on a 3-pointer from Bray. That trey capped a mini 8-2 run by the Wolves.

Lance McDowell led West Chester with a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds. He was 10-for-13 from the foul line in the contest. Foster finished with 15, and Jaleel Mack had 13.

West Chester concludes its 2010-11 campaign at home Saturday afternoon against Bloomsburg on Senior Day. The Golden Rams will honor seniors Kehinde Roberts and Eli Daniel before the tip.
