WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Jillian Murray hit her second home run of the season, and Kim Murl and Devon Utterback each tossed complete games to lead West Chester to a pair of one-run wins in a non-league doubleheader sweep over visiting Holy Family Tuesday afternoon.
West Chester (8-7) hung on for a 3-2 decision in the opener and then pulled out a 2-1 victory in the nightcap to move over the .500 mark. Holy Family (1-9) saw its losing streak hit seven games with the pair of losses.
Murray hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the first inning of game one to put West Chester on top early. Cassandra Fitzgerald-Black answered with a solo shot for Holy Family in the second. However, West Chester picked up an insurance tally in the third to restore its two-run advantage.
Nicole Cruts hit a RBI groundout, scoring Erin MacNamee, who had singled, stole second and was sacrificed over to third by Jessica Norris. Holy Family added one more run in the fifth. But, that was as close as the Tigers would get.
Murl (4-4) evened her record on the season with a complete-game, five-hitter. She allowed two runs, walked one and struck out four. MacNamee finished the opener 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and stolen bases.
Utterback (4-2) tossed a two-hitter, allowing one unearned run, to lead West Chester to the win in the nightcap. She walked one and struck out six.
Norris’ RBI double in the bottom of the sixth broke a 1-all tie. MacNamee hit a one-out single past short, and Norris ripped a double to right, plating MacNamee with the winning run. Four different Golden Rams recorded a base hit in the second game.
Jessica Schuck singled to lead off the third inning. Kim Begley came on to run, stole second, and moved up to third on a grounder back to the pitcher. She came across on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1 for the hosts. Holy Family scored its lone run in the top of the second.
West Chester is off until Friday when they travel to Salem, Va., for a tournament. The Golden Rams will take on Glenville State and Alderson-Broaddus on the first day of the tournament.
