WEST CHESTER, Pa. - After an exhilirating first set that went five set points before being decided, host West Chester University walked away from visiting East Stroudsburg, 3-0, in a PSAC East women's volleyball match Friday evening.
West Chester (13-6, 4-3 PSAC) climbed over the .500 mark in conference play for the first time this year with the win. East Stroudsburg (4-11, 2-5) could not capture the magic with which it played in that first set after the Golden Rams eeked out a 29-27 victory. WCU took the next two sets, 25-13 and 25-20.
Despite hitting just .130 in that first set, West Chester showed that it can pull out a win even if things aren't going its way. However, the Rams hit .167 in the second set, cruising after opening up a 6-0 advantage thanks to the serving of sophomore Dana Markol. In the third set, West Chester did not commit a hitting error and posted a .394 percentage to close out the match.
Markol, filling in at libero for Lisa Campbell for the fourth straight match, finished with eight digs. Campbell did not start, but did come off the bench to serve and play in the back row. She posted five digs. Freshman Mary Faust led West Chester with nine digs, falling one short of a double-double. She also dished out 11 assists.
Kelly Martin continues to hit the ball consistently in the middle for West Chester. She posted a tmatch-high 10 kills and hit .471. Lexi Kegerise recorded eight kills. Julie Boblits registered nine kills as well.
East Stroudsburg was led by Ashley Lesniak's seven kills and Annabelle Charlton's 16 assists. The Warriors also recorded nine team blocks - six from Megan Plumb.
West Chester takes on first-place Lock Haven Saturday afternoon in a grudge match for the top spot in the Eastern Division. The Golden Rams lost a pair of five-set matches to the Eagles a year ago. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at Hollinger Field House.
