WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester University dropped a close PSAC East men's tennis match with visiting Kutztown University, 6-3, Sunday afternoon. It marked the first time since 2000-01 that West Chester earned more than one win in the match.
West Chester (6-8, 1-2 PSAC) held a 2-1 advantage after the doubles play by taking the second and third challenges. The Rams duo of Jimmy Aridas and Connor Dunn won 9-7 while Steve Hlava and David Goldenberg were 8-4 winners in the third doubles. Unfortunately, the hosts could not get the three singles wins it needed to score the upset.
Every match between regional power Kutztown and West Chester had ended either 9-0 or 8-1 in favor of Kutztown since the Bears beat the Rams, 7-2 in 2000-01.
Varun Desai defeated Dunn. Desai won the first set 6-2 then fell to Dunn 2-6 in the second set. Desai capped the third set with a 6-2 win. Rushi Amin topped Andrew Peterson in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Matthew Maguire used 6-1, 6-4 wins over Goldenberg. Darren Krout defeated Cody Leimback. Ben Nace went the distance for Kutztown to upset J.J. Cooke, 6-1 and 7-6 in straight sets.
Hlava took WCU's only singles win over Parth Girme.
Things do not get any easier Monday as West Chester travels to Bloomsburg for a 3:30 p.m. conference tilt. Kutztown is the three-time defending conference champion while Bloomsburg has finished right behind the Golden Bears in the league standings.
