West Chester Men Topple Millersville, 5-4; Playoff Hopes Alive

Box Score

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – West Chester University won the final three singles matches of the day to come from behind and beat host Millersville University, 5-4, in PSAC men’s tennis action Saturday afternoon at McComsey Tennis Courts.

West Chester (8-8, 2-3 PSAC) ended a personal 16-match losing streak to Millersville (1-8, 0-3) while setting itself up for the program’s first postseason berth since the PSAC moved to the current team playoff format in 2004. The Golden Rams had not beaten the Marauders, who reached the NCAA Tournament just last season, since 1994.

A Mercyhurst loss in any of its remaining three league matches (Edinboro, Kutztown, Millersville) would clinch a playoff berth for West Chester.

Junior team captain David Goldenberg locked up a 6-1, 7-6 (7) victory at fourth singles in the final match of the day to clinch the win. Luan Kichen downed his opponent at fifth singles, 7-5, 6-1 while Cody Leimback topped his opponent at sixth singles, 6-1, 6-2 as part of the comeback.

The Golden Rams claimed two of the three doubles competitions to take an early lead in the match. However, the Marauders battled back with wins at the top three singles positions that put the hosts in command, 4-2.

Steve Hlava and Goldenberg teamed up for an 8-1 win at third doubles, and Jimmy Aridas and Connor Dunn were 8-5 winners at second doubles.

West Chester travels to Ursinus on Wednesday and then returns home Thursday for a non-conference tilt with University of Sciences as tune up for their possible playoff berth April 20-22 in Bloomsburg.
