LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Rondell White rushed for 196 yards and a pair of touchdowns, racking up 307 all-purpose yards, to lead No. 15 West Chester University to a 34-13 victory over host Lock Haven University in a PSAC East football contest inside Jack Hubert Stadium Saturday afternoon.
West Chester (7-0, 4-0 PSAC East) remains unbeaten and in a first-place tie with No. 7 Bloomsburg with the win. Lock Haven falls to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The Golden Rams move to 7-0 to open the season for the first time since 1974, when they opened up 8-0.
White carried the ball 33 times for the second straight game, and West Chester grinding out the second half with its running game while protecting a 24-3 halftime lead.
The Bald Eagles closed the gap to 24-13 by the end of the third quarter. However, Brandon Monk snapped off a 20-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to spoil the hosts' homecoming festivities.
Sean McCartney was 15-for-20 for 251 yards and a touchdown against two interceptions. McCartney found Erick Brundidge in the corner of the end zone from 39 yards out to end West Chester's game-opening drive and put the visitors in front, 7-0. White scored the first of his pair of 2-yard TD runs in the first half with four minutes to play in the opening frame to give the Rams a 14-0 edge after 15 minutes of play.
Lock Haven answered with a 24-yard field goal early in the second quarter. But, White found pay dirt again from two yards out five minutes before the half to stake West Chester to a 21-3 lead. Shawn Leo (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) kicked a season-long 41-yard field goal with 1:03 to go in the first half to close out the scoring in the first 30 minutes.
Brundidge finished the day with four catches for 85 yards and his TD reception.
West Chester travels to Shippensburg next Saturday for a showdown against the Raiders.
NOTES: West Chester's win moves them to 7-0 to open the season for the first time since 1974 … the Golden Rams' eight-game winning streak, dating back to last year, is its longest since 1992 … Lock Haven's rushing touchdown, which capped the Bald Eagles' opening drive of the second half, was just the third rushing TD allowed by WCU's defense … Lock Haven rushed for 110 yards on the day, marking the first time since opening day that WCU's defense allowed more than 100 yards rushing in a contest … Sr., RB Rondell White became just the second player in school history to surpass 6,000 career all-purpose yards … an 8-yard run in the first quarter on WCU's second possession accomplished that … White also surpassed 1,000 yards rushing on the season, which also came in the second half … White's two TD runs established a new personal best of 13 rushing TDs in a single season … White's 307 all-purpose yards marked the second time this season that he surpassed 300 all-purpose yards in a game.
