WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester University's men's tennis squad dropped a 5-4 decision to visiting St. Thomas Aquinas in the spring opener for the Golden Rams on a windy Monday afternoon on South Campus.
West Chester (0-4) picked up wins in the singles competition at fourth, fifth and sixth while also capturing the third doubles. However, it was not enough as St. Thomas Aquinas built a 2-1 lead after doubles and then got wins at first and third singles to take command of the match.
The Rams battled back as Patrick McGinley and J.J. Cooke registered wins at fifth and sixth singles to pull within one of St. Thomas Aquinas. However, the visitors took No. 2 singles to clinch the match and pick up the win.
McGinley was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at fifth singles while Cooke was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at sixth singles. Senior David Goldenberg pulled out a win at fourth singles, rallying to take the second set and then the third in a tie-breaker format, after dropping the opening set. Goldenberg was a 4-6, 6-4, 7-4 winner.
Goldenberg and Steve Hlave were 8-1 winners at third doubles for the Golden Rams as well.
