WEST CHESTER, Pa. – David Goldenberg defeated Devin Bolton, 6-1, 6-0, at fourth singles to clinch a PSAC men’s tennis match against rival Bloomsburg, 8-1, Friday afternoon on South Campus.
Good Friday turned into more of a “Great” Friday for West Chester (3-8, 1-0 PSAC), who defeated Bloomsburg (0-3, 0-1) for the first time since the turn of the century and just the seventh time in 39 meetings between the two schools. The Golden Rams were 0-12 against the Huskies since the year 2000 entering Friday’s match.
However, Cody Leimback and Wanzell Fleming notched an 8-1 win at second doubles while Steve Hlava and David Goldenberg were 8-0 winners at third doubles to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.
“(Both the men’s and women’s teams) showed up, not just to compete, but to beat Bloomsburg,” WCU head coach Tina Tharp said. “I am very proud of these two teams.”
West Chester swept the singles matches with Leimback picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win at the sixth spot and Lars Kristiansen notching a 6-1, 6-0 win at third singles, before Goldenberg locked up the win at fourth singles.
Connor Dunn was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at first singles, and Chaz Irwin was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at second singles to close out the match.
West Chester, winners in three of its last four outings, hosts Kutztown on South Campus Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
