Softball Splits Doubleheader With Holy Family

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester scored all eight of its runs in game one in its final three at bats, however, Holy Family shut out the hosts in the second game to salvage of split of the non-league softball doubleheader Tuesday.

West Chester (20-9) scored eight runs on 14 hits en route to an 8-6 victory in game one. Holy Family (9-11) starter Victoria Reuscher (5-2) scattered seven hits in a complete-game shutout in the nightcap, 6-0.

The Golden Rams plated five runs in the bottom of the fifth to erase a 1-0 deficit. Freshman Laura Altenburger smashed her second home run of the season, a two-run shot, to left-center in the frame. Kim Murl and J.P. Norris each went 3-for-3 in the game as well. Altenburger finished 2-for-4.

Reigning PSAC East player of the week, Kelly Anderson, collected a hit in each game of the doubleheader to extend her current hit streak to 20 games.

Kate Skokowski (1) came on in relief of game one starter Devon Utterback with West Chester clinging to a 7-6 lead and runners at second and third with two outs in the sixth. She struck out the first batter she faced, and then induced the next hitter to ground out to Norris at shortstop to get out of that jam. Skokowski then pitched the seventh inning to pick up the save, making a winner out of Utterback (10-2).

Holy Family scored one run in the fourth on a solo home run from Erin Corrado and added three in the fifth and two more in the sixth. However, West Chester always had an answer for the Tigers’ rallies and maintained its lead once the Golden Rams jumped in front following their five-run fourth.

Reuscher silenced West Chester’s bat in the nightcap, keeping the ball on the ground and in the infield for the majority of the game. Altenburger went 2-for-3 with a double. But, that was the Rams’ only extra-base hit all game. Her two base hits marked the only multiple-hit performance in game two.

Murl (2-1) suffered the loss inside the circle. She tossed 3.2 innings, surrendering one run on six hits. Skokowski relieved her, but did not fare any better.

West Chester hosts Shippensburg on Friday in a PSAC East showdown on South Campus.
