Box Score
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Red-shirt freshman quarterback Andrew Derr was 15-for-25 for 225 yards and three touchdowns in leading Purple to a 23-10 victory over Gold in the annual spring football game to conclude the non-traditional season inside John A. Farrell Stadium on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon.
Derr led Purple on a scoring drive in each of the second, third and fourth quarters to even the series at 3-3-1 since 2007. Purple racked up 308 yards of total offense led by rising-senior Rondell White’s 135 all-purpose yards. He rushed for 77 yards on 19 carries and caught six passes for 58 yards for Purple.
Derr hooked up with fellow red-shirt freshman wide receiver Ted Patton on a 33-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter. That capped a seven-play, 80-yard drive for Purple and gave them a 9-0 lead. Purple started the game with two points after winning a team competition during practice this past week.
Rising-senior place-kicker Shawn Leo booted a 31-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to make it a 9-3 game at the break. LaRonn Lee caught a 5-yard pass from Derr with 5:33 left in the third quarter, giving Purple a commanding, 16-3, lead. Greg Herrmann added the extra point.
Gold quarterback Drew Loughery dove over the goal line from 1-yard out with 1:28 left in the third quarter to pull the Gold squad to within 16-10.
Jim Hurley then caught a 9-yard from Derr with 9:56 left in the game to put the finishing touches on the scoring. Will Huff added that extra point. Derr threw the ball to White, who was standing at the 3-yard line. However, the ball bounced off White’s shoulder right into the waiting arms of Hurley standing in the end zone.
Loughery was 18-for-23 with 204 yards. He was sacked six times. Rising-sophomore quarterback Mike Gallo went 4-for-8 for 29 yards on the Gold squad. Brandon Monk rushed nine times for a game-high 87 yards, including a 61-yard run. Eddie Elliott ran four times for 17 yards on the Gold side.
Tim Brown caught a game-high eight passes for 70 yards for the Gold team. Courtland Bragg had three catches for 41 yards, and Shannon Mayer had a pair of catches for 40 yards.
Hurley finished with 50 yards receiving on three catches. Erick Brundidge caught two passes for 73 yards as well.
Punter Rich Bruno kicked for both sides. He averaged 45 yards per punt on seven attempts. Unfortunately, he had an 82-yard punt called back on an offisides penalty that gave Gold a first down in the first half. He did get off a pair of 50-yard kicks, however.
Defensively, Shawn Krautzel led all players with 10 tackles. Ronell Williams posted nine stops, including 1.5 tackles for a loss, half a sack and a pass break-up. Mike Labor and Anthony McCloskey each registered six tackles. McCloskey knocked down a pair of passes at the line of scrimmage.
