WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Junior Carly Yost scored two goals and assisted on another to lead No. 7 West Chester to a 3-0 victory over visiting Mansfield on a sun-splashed Thursday afternoon in the season opener for both schools.
Â
West Chester (1-0, 1-0 PSAC) scored twice in the first, with Yost netting both, to give the Golden Rams a 2-0 advantage at halftime. Marie D'Angelo added an insurance tally in the second half to close out the scoring against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference foe Mansfield (0-1, 0-1).
Â
"It was our first game, and everybody was a little nervous," head coach Betty Ann Kempf Townsley said. "I think it took us awhile to get that out of our system. I was very pleased with the second half. I thought we played many more combinations and took a lot more shots."
Â
Yost opened the scoring in the 15th minute when she finished off a cross from Dana Hunt. Her shot into the top left-hand corner of the net glanced off Mansfield goalkeeper Alana Krieger's outstretched hands and into the back of the net. Yost added another exactly three minutes later when she headed in Ashley Saylor's corner kick to double West Chester's lead.
Â
D'Angelo tapped in a cross from Yost in the 64th minute to salt away the contest.
Â
Freshman goalkeeper Alex Srolis (1-0) made three saves in picking up a shutout in goal for West Chester in her first college game. Krieger (0-1) made 11 saves for the Mountaineers in a losing effort.
Â
Thursday's season opener marked the first contest on West Chester University's new Field Turf surface on South Campus. The turf was installed over the summer at the soccer complex.
Â
"(The players) love playing on it," Kempf Townsley commented about the new surface. "We have the speed to play on a surface like this. Many teams around the league already have this surface. So, we have had a chance to train on it."
Â
West Chester heads to Kutztown on Saturday afternoon for its first road contest of the season against the Golden Bears at 1 p.m. The Rams return home a week from Friday when they host Mercyhurst in a doubleheader with the men's team.
