Polyakov Sets Pool Record; WCU Downs NYU, 178-125

WEST CHESTER, Pa.  – Victor Polyakov (Taganrog, Russia) was a triple winner, and also helped the 400-yard freestyle relay take first place as host West Chester downed visiting New York University, 204-82, Saturday afternoon at Graham Natatorium.
 
West Chester (9-2) won 14 events, including both diving board competitions, to escape with a win over a very deep NYU squad that picked up points with multiple finishers in the top eight.
 
Polyakov won the 1000 free in 9 minutes, 17.82 seconds, breaking the pool record and recording a time that is in the Top 8 in all of Division II currently. He also won the 200 backstroke (1:53.31) and the 500 free (4:39.33) while swimming the anchor leg of the 400 free relay that was a winner in 3:06.82. He teamed with Evan Sherkness (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh), Bradley Strathmeyer (York, Pa./York) and countryman Daniil Sokman (Russia) in that relay.
 
Michael Oliver (Howell, N.J./Freehold Twp.) continues to put up challenging times, winning the 100 breaststroke in a personal best unshaved time of 57 seconds flat. He also claimed a personal best time of 1:56.49 in the 200 Individual Medley, placing second to Thomas McCormick (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), who won the event with a time of 1:55.85. Oliver won the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.41 with McCormick right behind him in 2:09.24. McCormick also swam the second leg of the 200 medley relay that began the day with a first-place showing.
 
Diver Jonas Ricci (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) picked up his first collegiate win off the 1-meter board with a combined score of 311.10. Dan Roy (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) was second with 289.88 points. He won the 3m competition with a score of 326.93. Luke Kisiel (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville) placed third off the 1m board with 262.13 points while finishing runner-up to Roy off the 3m board with a score of 267.15.
 
Luke Maguire (Conshohocken, Pa./LaSalle) swam the third leg of the 200 medley relay while winning the 100 butterfly in 50.80 seconds. Sherkness swam the anchor leg of that medley relay and also won the 50 free in 21.51 seconds. Sokman won the 100 backstroke in 52.29. Eric Long (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) was the only other winner for West Chester, capturing the 200 butterfly in 1:54.48.
 
West Chester now begins training for defense of its PSAC crown at the 2016 PSAC Swimming Championships later this month.
