Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Palmer Makes History, Golden Rams Defeat Slippery Rock 1-0

Slippery Rock, Pa.-For the second time this week it took 80+ minutes for No.12 West Chester (12-2-1, 10-0-0 PSAC) to find the back of the net and once again this late tally proved to be enough to propel West Chester to victory this time by a score of 1-0 over Slippery Rock (4-9-3, 3-5-2 PSAC) on Saturday afternoon.
How it Happened:
  • West Chester applied pressure throughout most of the first half but they were unable to find the back of the net.
  • In the 52nd minute West Chester had a golden opportunity when Brett Glasco (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) earned a penalty shot, however, a great save from Slippery Rock goalkeeper Jonathan Sharp kept the game scoreless for a little while longer.
  • In the 86th minute West Chester finally found the back of the net Kyle Hoops (Phoenixville, Pa./Great Valley) headed home a beautiful corner kick from Daniel Grindrod (Neshaminy, Pa./Feasterville)  to give West Chester the late 1-0 advantage.
  • West Chester would then possess the ball for most of the final four minutes to prevent Slippery Rock from evening the score in the closing minutes.
Inside the Numbers:
  • West Chester outshot their hosts by a 13-7 margin including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.
  • West Chester also held a 4-1 advantage in corners which ultimately proved key in deciding the outcome of this closely contested match.
  • Senior goalie Matt Palmer (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) worked hard in goal once again recording two big saves on his way to the shutout victory.
  • This afternoons shutout victory was the 15th shutout of Palmers career which moves him into a tie for first all time in career shutouts with Joe Bocklet (1995-1998) and Sean Gablehouse (1998-2001).
