Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

West Chester Tops No. 11 Millersville, 3-2

West Chester, Pa-West Chester men's soccer(7-2-1, 5-0 PSAC) welcomed the No. 11 Millersville Marauders(7-2-1, 3-2 PSAC)  to Rockwell field for a pivotal PSAC matchup.  The Golden Rams pulled off the upset defeating Millersville 3-2.
How it Happened:
  • West Chester opened the scoring early when Kyle Hoops(Phoenixville, Pa./Great Valley took an assist from Daniel Grindrod(Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) and knocked it in to give West Chester the early 1-0 lead.
  • Just eight minutes later freshman Doug Goitia(Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) registered a goal of his own as he beat his defender and the goalie, thus, allowing him to deposit the ball into the open net to extend the lead to 2-0.
  • The Golden Rams were not done as in the 36th minute Jason Pixley(Philadelphia, Pa./Central) tallied a goal of his own off a cross from Stephen Thompson(Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) to make the score 3-0 in favor of West Chester.
  • This 3-0 advantage did not last as Millersville broke through just two minutes later when Nathan Maynard used an assist from Kyle Finsterbush to trim the Golden Rams lead to 3-1 heading to the half.
  • Millersville tallied another goal in the 58th minute when Marcus Frangakis converted a Penalty kick to trim the lead to 3-2.
  • Matt Palmer(Bangor, Pa./Bangor) went the distance to earn the victory once again recording two saves and facing eight shots on the day.
Inside the Numbers:
  • West Chester outshot their guests by a 10-9 margin including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Hoops recorded his first goal of the season.
  • Grindrod and Thompon collected their first career points via assists on goals from Hoops and Pixley.
  • Goitia tallied his fourth goal of the season.
  • This is West Chester's second win this season over a top 25 opponent with the previous victory coming over Mercyhurst they have outscored their opponents by a 6-3 margin in these two top 25 victories.
  • 5-0 is the best start to PSAC play in team history with the previous best coming in 1994 when the Golden Rams started the season  4-0.
  • The last time the Golden Rams defeated the Marauders was October 18, 2014 when West Chester won 2-0.
  • The last time the Golden Rams scored three goals against Millersville was back in the 2012 season when West Chester won 3-2 in overtime. The three first half goals also sets a record for the most goals WCU has ever scored in the first half against Millersville.
