WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Sr., M
Brett Glasco (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) tallied the game winner to lift West Chester (14-2-2) past East Stroudsburg (14-4-2), 2-1, in double overtime of the second round of the Division II NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament this afternoon inside Rockwell Field.
Glasco's goal in the 106th minute of action marked the first NCAA victory for West Chester's program since 1967. West Chester ironically enough beat East Stroudsburg in that match to advance to the next round as well.
"I told Nico [Meola] to do what exactly what he did earlier and it landed in the right spot again and I was able to finish it," said Glasco. "We have a great group of guys who are willing to work hard for each other."
West Chester trailed for the majority of the match as East Stroudsburg's Brandon Levano converted a penalty kick to give the Warriors a 1-0 advantage at 23:18. However, the Golden Rams kept attacking the net.
Late in the second half, Glasco set up sophomore
Brett Miller (Washington Crossing, Pa. / Council Rock North) who scored in front of the box. His shot went past a diving effort by East Stroudsburg's Will Boerema. That goal sent the match in overtime and eventually double overtime. The pair of teams were used to this after having gone to penalty kicks a week prior in the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament.
In double overtime, Glasco raced down the near sideline of Rockwell Field. He fired a shot past a diving Boerema to complete the comeback for the Golden Rams.
"Great way to get a goal at the end of regulation by Brett Miller and Glasco was in a great spot," said head coach Michael Been. "A senior captain should finish those goals for you to win NCAA tournament games."
When asked the victory, Benn could not have been more proud of his team.
"The result in the PSAC tournament was hard [lost in penalty kicks]. Our big goal was to win a PSAC championship. We spent a lot of time getting over that last week. Then to see East Stroudsburg get a penalty kick goal in the first half. Our guys response was great. They kept coming back and kept fighting. East Stroudsburg is a great team. It made it hard on us. We didn't give up."
Sr., GK
Matt Palmer (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) recorded the victory with three saves in the contest and the lone goal he surrendered came early on by way of the penalty kick. His 13-1-2 record ties Andrew Shafear (2004) for the most wins in a single season as a goalkeeper.
Statistically, West Chester led in all categories as the Golden Rams fired off 17 shots to the Warriors' 10. They also managed an advantage in shots on goal (8-6) and corner kicks (7-4). Momentum swung West Chester's way in the second half as four of the seven corners came during that time. There were several fouls in the match as West Chester had 19, while East Stroudsburg provided 15.
The victory was the first NCAA win for the Golden Rams in 50 years and Benn soaked up the moment.
"That is unbelievable. Every college student-athlete wants to play in the NCAA tournament. Now we are going to be a part of the Sweet 16. We need to prepare next for whoever is on the schedule. It is such a great honor and I'm happy for my guys. They have made a lot of history this year and they deserve it."
The Golden Rams have now won nine of their last ten with that other match being a tie in the PSAC semifinal to East Stroudsburg.
West Chester is set to face the winner of No. 1 Charleston (WV)/ No. 4 West Va. Wesleyan.
