PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – West Chester produced a pair of football players on the 2017
Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area squad, which was announced by that same organization Wednesday afternoon.
Sr., WR
Tyler Karpinski (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Township) and senior offensive lineman
Alex Host (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) were two of the 24 student-athletes recognized for their efforts both on the field and in the classroom.
Karpinski carries a 3.56 grade point average (GPA) in Finance/Accounting, while Host generated a 3.54 in History.
On the field, Karpinski was the main threat on the outside for West Chester's offense that averaged 33.1 points per game. The leading receiver contributed a team-best 55 receptions for 787 yards and seven touchdowns. His achievements landed him First Team All-PSAC as well as First Team All-ECAC.
Host on the other hand allowed Karpinski and the offense to flourish, having played in every single game this season. West Chester was fifth in the PSAC with 188.7 rushing yards per contest. Through the air, the Golden Rams produced 218.3 yards for a grand total of 407 yards per game.
Both contributed to West Chester's ability to clinch the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division crown and secure an opening round victory over Shippensburg in the NCAA Division II Playoff.
Penn senior wide receiver
Justin Watson has been named the
Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Football Performer of the Year for the third consecutive season after voting by the sports information offices from 29 institutions in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. West Chester was amongst the nine different schools represented on the
