No. 4 West Chester Wins Fourth Straight


MANSFIELD, Pa. – Sr., F Rachel Toppi (Glassboro, NJ./Glassboro) was the difference maker in this one, providing a goal just under three minutes left to propel the No. 4 ranked Golden Rams (4-0) past host Mansfield (3-3) Saturday afternoon. West Chester claimed their first road victory by a final score of 2-1.

How it Happened:
  • Just 13 minutes into the first half, sophomore Katie Thompson (Washington, NJ./Warren Hills) ripped a shot from the left side of the cage to give West Chester an early 1-0 lead.
  • In the second half Mansfield, would break through when Larissa Motts tipped it in to even the score at one apiece.
  • Toppi took a shot off a deflection following a penalty corner and deposited it into the back of the net to give the Golden Rams a 2-1 advantage.
  • Mansfield applied heavy pressure in the closing seconds with multiple corners in the final seconds of the game, but Marissa Elizardo(North Wales, Pa./North Penn) made multiple big saves to preserve the victory.

Inside the Numbers:
  • The Golden Rams outshot their hosts by a wide margin as they took 44 shots compared to just 16 shots from the Mountaineers.
  • West Chester also held an advantage in shots on goal as they recorded 27 shots on goal compared to just nine for Mansfield.
  • The Golden Rams also held a 20-16 advantage in Penalty Corners on the afternoon.
  • Elizardo worked hard making eight saves including a huge save in the closing seconds to earn her fourth victory of the season.
  • Thompson recorded her second goal of the season.
  • Toppi recorded her fourth goal of the year with the game winner.
