KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Katie Thompson (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) scored a second half goal to pull visiting West Chester within one. But, host Kutztown held on for a 2-1 win inside Andre Reed Stadium in a field hockey contest Wednesday night.
Â
West Chester (5-1) saw its five-game win streak to open the season come to a close while Kutztown improved to 5-2 overall on the year.
Â
Thompson's second-half tally was the only marker over the final 35 minutes of play. However, the host Golden Bears were able to put two past WCU goalkeeper
Marissa Elizardo (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) in the first half to race out to a 2-0 lead by halftime.
Â
Kutztown limited West Chester to just six shots in the contest and held an 11-5 advantage on corners, which hampered any momentum, or scoring opportunities for the Golden Rams. Elizardo made eight saves in the game, keeping her mates within striking distance.
Â
The non-league matchup was the first of two meetings between the PSAC foes. Kutztown will visit West Chester on Oct. 11 in what will be a conference matchup.
Â
West Chester returns home for its first PSAC tilt on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Vonnie Gros Field.
