SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.- In a battle of two regionally ranked teams the West Chester men's soccer team (9-2-3, 6-1-2 PSAC) took to the road on Wednesday afternoon to take on Shippensburg (9-2-3, 5-1-3 PSAC). Each side broke through once in the opening 45 minutes but neither side managed to break through in the next 65 minutes as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
How it Happened:
- Shippensburg struck first as Julian Horstmann scored on a header off an assist from Cole Kropnick to give Shippensburg the lead in the 28th minute.
- In the 41st minute, West Chester answered back as Colin Muller (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) took an assist from Shane Hartey (Runnemede, N.J./Triton Hall) to tie the score heading to the half.
- In the second half, each side had its chances but neither side was able to break through, thus, sending the game to overtime for the Golden Rams fourth overtime contest of the season.
- Both sides threatened throughout overtime although neither side managed to score the elusive second goal, thus, ending the game in a draw.
Inside the Numbers:
- West Chester ended regulation with a 14-7 advantage in shots including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. West Chester also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks at the end of regulation.
- West Chester ended the game with an 18-11 advantage in shots and a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. West Chester also ended the game with an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
- West Chester is now 1-0-3 in overtime contests so far this season.
- Will Marshall (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) ended the contest with three big saves including a pair of clutch saves in overtime to hold Shippensburg to just one goal. His counterpart Garret Watson made four big saves to his own to slow down an explosive West Chester offense.
- This draw is Shippensburg's third consecutive draw as the Raiders also played to draws against California and Millersville in the previous two games.
- This draw also allows West Chester to clinch a playoff spot in the upcoming PSAC Tournament. West Chester is just the second team to punch its ticket joining Gannon as those guaranteed a spot in the PSAC Tournament at the end of the season.
